A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.7.4 (Operating System). Affected is the function tcp_check_send_head
of the file include/net/tcp.h of the component SACK State Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The tcp_check_send_head function in include/net/tcp.h in the Linux kernel before 4.7.5 does not properly maintain certain SACK state after a failed data copy, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (tcp_xmit_retransmit_queue use-after-free and system crash) via a crafted SACK option.
The weakness was published 10/16/2016 by Marco Grassi (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-6828 since 08/17/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
