A vulnerability has been found in Cisco Web Security Appliance 7.1/7.5.7.7 (Anti-Malware Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Web Framework. The manipulation as part of a URL leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The web framework in IronPort AsyncOS on Cisco Web Security Appliance devices before 7.1.3-013, 7.5 before 7.5.0-838, and 7.7 before 7.7.0-550 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary commands via crafted command-line input in a URL sent over IPv4, aka Bug ID CSCzv69294.

The weakness was shared 06/26/2013 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20130626-wsa as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3383 since 05/06/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:

These vulnerabilities can only be triggered by IPv4 traffic directed to the management IP addresses of the affected system. These vulnerabilities can be exploited over the default management ports, TCP port 8080 or TCP port 8443.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69082 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Cisco Web Security Appliance (cisco-sa-20130626-wsa)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43414 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Cisco IronPort AsyncOS Software (cisco-sa-20130626)).

Upgrading to version 7.5.1-201 or 7.7.0-602 eliminates this vulnerability.Proper firewalling of tcp/8080 / tcp/8443 is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

The default management ports can be reconfigured on the system. (…) Administrators can use the interfaceconifg command to disable appliance management via the GUI. Alternatively, this can be done via the GUI by editing the management interface properties under Network->IP interfaces-> Edit and then selecting Disable Appliance Management. (…) Administrators can also limit the attack surface by restricting IP addresses that can access the management interface. This can be done using the adminaccessconfig command and selecting IPACCESS from the menu.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85282) and Tenable (69082). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. The entries 9275, 9276 and 9279 are related to this item.
