The XrayWrapper implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 22.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.7, Thunderbird before 17.0.7, and Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.7 does not properly restrict use of DefaultValue for method calls, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code with chrome privileges via a crafted web site that triggers use of a user-defined (1) toString or (2) valueOf method.

The weakness was presented 06/25/2013 by Christian Holler (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA 2013-59 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1697 since 02/13/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66996 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox / xulrunner (CESA-2013:0981)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121294 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:0981)).

Upgrading to version 22.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
