The SPIP template composer/compiler in SPIP 3.1.2 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary PHP code by uploading an HTML file with a crafted (1) INCLUDE or (2) INCLURE tag and then accessing it with a valider_xml action.
The bug was discovered 09/15/2016. The weakness was disclosed 10/12/2016 by Nicolas Chatelain with Sysdream Labs as CVE-2016-7998: SPIP 3.1.2 Template Compiler/Composer PHP Code Execution as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7998 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94476 (Debian DLA-695-1 : spip security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11709 (SPIP Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
