SPIP up to 3.1.2 Template input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in SPIP up to 3.1.2 (Content Management System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Template Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The SPIP template composer/compiler in SPIP 3.1.2 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary PHP code by uploading an HTML file with a crafted (1) INCLUDE or (2) INCLURE tag and then accessing it with a valider_xml action.

The bug was discovered 09/15/2016. The weakness was disclosed 10/12/2016 by Nicolas Chatelain with Sysdream Labs as CVE-2016-7998: SPIP 3.1.2 Template Compiler/Composer PHP Code Execution as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7998 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The following code is the reason for this vulnerability:

<INCLURE(xxx"\)\);}system\("touch /tmp/exploited"\);/*)>

A public exploit has been developed by Nicolas Chatelain in HTML and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94476 (Debian DLA-695-1 : spip security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11709 (SPIP Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 3.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (40595), Tenable (94476) and SecurityFocus (BID 93451†). The entries VDB-93006, VDB-93007, VDB-93016 and VDB-93018 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
