A vulnerability was found in Apple macOS 10.12.0 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component libarchive. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-4679 since 05/11/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
An issue existed within the path validation logic for symlinks. This issue was addressed through improved path sanitization.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94337 (Apple TV < 10.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370175 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update Sierra 10.12.1, El Capitan 2016-002 and Yosemite 2016-006 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-10-24-2)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
