Apple Xcode up to 8.0 Node.js integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple Xcode up to 8.0 (Programming Tool Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the file Node.js. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was published 10/27/2016 by Guido Vranken as HT207268 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-0797 since 12/16/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

Multiple issues existed in Node.js in Xcode Server. These issues were addressed by updating to Node.js version 4.5.0.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89842 (Amazon Linux AMI : openssl (ALAS-2016-661) (DROWN) (SLOTH)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168833 (OpenSuSE Security Update for libopenssl0_9_8 (openSUSE-SU-2016:1241-1)).

Upgrading to version 8.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (89842). Similar entries are available at 81112, 81133, 81142 and 81144.
