A vulnerability classified as critical was found in OpenJPEG 2.1.1 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component JPEG2000 Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A buffer overflow in OpenJPEG 2.1.1 causes arbitrary code execution when parsing a crafted image. An exploitable code execution vulnerability exists in the jpeg2000 image file format parser as implemented in the OpenJpeg library. A specially crafted jpeg2000 file can cause an out of bound heap write resulting in heap corruption leading to arbitrary code execution. For a successful attack, the target user needs to open a malicious jpeg2000 file. The jpeg2000 image file format is mostly used for embedding images inside PDF documents and the OpenJpeg library is used by a number of popular PDF renderers making PDF documents a likely attack vector.
The bug was discovered 09/29/2016. The weakness was shared 10/28/2016 by Aleksandar Nikolic with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared at talosintelligence.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-8332 since 09/28/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 29 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96147 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : openjpeg2 (SUSE-SU-2016:3270-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169459 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for openjpeg2 (SUSE-SU-2016:3270-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (96147). The entries 93187, 93188, 93189 and 93190 are related to this item.
