A vulnerability was found in Pillow up to 3.3.1. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file Image.core.map_buffer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Pillow before 3.3.2 allows context-dependent attackers to obtain sensitive information by using the "crafted image file" approach, related to an "Integer Overflow" issue affecting the Image.core.map_buffer in map.c component.
The weakness was presented 11/04/2016 by Cris Neckar (Website). The advisory is shared for download at pillow.readthedocs.io. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9189 since 11/04/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95513 (FreeBSD : Pillow -- multiple vulnerabilities (bc4898d5-a794-11e6-b2d3-60a44ce6887b)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196726 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Python-imaging Vulnerabilities (USN-3229-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (95513). See 93329 for similar entry.
