NVIDIA Graphics Driver on Quadro/NVS/GeForce/Tesla Kernel Mode Layer nvlddmkm.sys/nvidia.ko permission

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in NVIDIA Graphics Driver on Quadro/NVS/GeForce/Tesla (Hardware Driver Software) (version unknown). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function in the library nvlddmkm.sys/nvidia.ko of the component Kernel Mode Layer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a permission vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-275. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

For the NVIDIA Quadro, NVS, GeForce, and Tesla products, NVIDIA GPU Display Driver contains a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys for Windows or nvidia.ko for Linux) handler where a missing permissions check may allow users to gain access to arbitrary physical memory, leading to an escalation of privileges.

The weakness was presented 11/08/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at nvidia.custhelp.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-7382 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1222 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94573 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS : nvidia-graphics-drivers-304, nvidia-graphics-drivers-340, nvidia-graphics-drivers-367 vulnerability (USN-3122-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370263 (NVIDIA Windows GPU Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
