The weakness was shared 11/08/2016 by Steven Vittitoe with Google Project Zero as MS16-133 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7230 since 09/09/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94634 (MS16-133: Security Update for Microsoft Office (3199168)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110290 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS16-133)).

Applying the patch MS16-133 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
