Microsoft Windows Vista SP2 up to Server 2016 Common Log File System Driver Memory memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Common Log File System Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability (Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was released 11/08/2016 as MS16-134 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7184 since 09/09/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

Elevation of privilege vulnerabilities exist when the Windows Common Log File System (CLFS) driver improperly handles objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerabilities could run processes in an elevated context.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94635 (MS16-134: Security Update for Common Log File System Driver (3193706)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91299 (Microsoft Windows Common Log File System Driver Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS16-134)). The advisory illustrates:

To exploit the vulnerabilities, an attacker would first have to log on to the system, and then run a specially crafted application to take control over the affected system.

Applying the patch MS16-134 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The bulletin contains the following remark:

The security update addresses the vulnerabilities by correcting how CLFS handles objects in memory

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (94635). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 93397, 93398, 93399 and 93400.
