A vulnerability was found in Google Android (Smartphone Operating System) (version now known). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Kernel System-Call Auditing Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 11/07/2016 as Android Security Bulletin - November 2016 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at source.android.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-6136 since 07/01/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95046 (OracleVM 3.3 : Unbreakable / etc (OVMSA-2016-0163)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157314 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for kernel (ELSA-2016-2574)-Deprecated).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
