Trango Password hard-coded password

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Trango. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument Password with the input value bakergiga leads to a hard-coded password vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-259. The product contains a hard-coded password, which it uses for its own inbound authentication or for outbound communication to external components. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was disclosed 11/11/2016 by Ian Ling as Trango Systems hidden default root login (all models) as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1078.001. The advisory points out:

Trango devices all have a built-in, hidden root account, with a default password that is the same across many devices and software revisions. This account is accessible via ssh and grants access to the underlying embedded unix OS on the device, allowing full control over it.

A public exploit has been developed by Ian Ling and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 35 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:

Recent software updates for some models have changed this password, but have not removed this backdoor.
