SPIP 3.1 Internal Forum Persistent cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in SPIP 3.1 (Content Management System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Internal Forum. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (Persistent). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity.

The weakness was released 11/17/2016 by Tim Coen with Curesec Research Team as SPIP 3.1: XSS & Host Header Injection as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

When posting a message in the internal Forum, user input is properly encoded, thus disallowing XSS. However, a hypertext link may be added as well, and there is no check on the protocol of the supplied link, which leads to an XSS vulnerability.

A public exploit has been developed by Tim Coen and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 137 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 3.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 93692, 93693 and 93694.
