A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function sctp_sf_ootb
of the file net/sctp/sm_statefuns.c of the component SCTP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 11/24/2016. The weakness was presented 10/25/2016 by Andrey Konovalov as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9555 since 11/22/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The following code is the reason for this vulnerability:
/* Report violation if chunk len overflows */ ch_end = ((__u8 *)ch) + SCTP_PAD4(ntohs(ch->length)); if (ch_end > skb_tail_pointer(skb)) return sctp_sf_violation_chunklen(net, ep, asoc, type, arg, commands);
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95801 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:3111-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169421 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:3049-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:
/* Report violation if chunk len overflows */ ch_end = ((__u8 *)ch) + SCTP_PAD4(ntohs(ch->length)); if (ch_end > skb_tail_pointer(skb)) return sctp_sf_violation_chunklen(net, ep, asoc, type, arg, commands);
