A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.3.5 (Operating System). This issue affects the function hash_accept
of the file crypto/algif_hash.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The hash_accept function in crypto/algif_hash.c in the Linux kernel before 4.3.6 allows local users to cause a denial of service (OOPS) by attempting to trigger use of in-kernel hash algorithms for a socket that has received zero bytes of data.
The bug was discovered 11/24/2016. The weakness was published 11/28/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-8646 since 10/12/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95702 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2016-1428)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169577 (OpenSuSE Security Update for the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2016:3061-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.3.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95702) and SecurityFocus (BID 94309†). Similar entries are available at VDB-93466, VDB-93465, VDB-93467 and VDB-93468. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
