Linux Kernel up to 4.8.11 vfio_pci_intrs.c kzalloc integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.11 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function kzalloc of the file drivers/vfio/pci/vfio_pci_intrs.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

drivers/vfio/pci/vfio_pci_intrs.c in the Linux kernel through 4.8.11 misuses the kzalloc function, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (integer overflow) or have unspecified other impact by leveraging access to a vfio PCI device file.

The bug was discovered 10/26/2016. The weakness was presented 11/28/2016 by Vlad Tsyrklevich (Website). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-9084 since 10/27/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95702 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2016-1428)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276227 (Fedora Security Update for kernel (FEDORA-2016-ee3a114958)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95702) and SecurityFocus (BID 93930†). See VDB-93467, VDB-93468, VDB-93490 and VDB-93842 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
