The file scanning mechanism of JFilterInput::isFileSafe() in Joomla! CMS before 3.6.5 does not consider alternative PHP file extensions when checking uploaded files for PHP content, which enables a user to upload and execute files with the `.php6`, `.php7`, `.phtml`, and `.phpt` extensions. Additionally, JHelperMedia::canUpload() did not blacklist these file extensions as uploadable file types.

The weakness was released 12/05/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-9836. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95916 (Joomla! < 3.6.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 3.6.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
