An issue was discovered in phpMyAdmin. Some data is passed to the PHP unserialize() function without verification that it's valid serialized data. The unserialization can result in code execution because of the interaction with object instantiation and autoloading. All 4.6.x versions (prior to 4.6.4), 4.4.x versions (prior to 4.4.15.8), and 4.0.x versions (prior to 4.0.10.17) are affected.
The bug was discovered 08/06/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/11/2016 by Emanuel Bronshtein (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-6620 since 08/06/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/05/2022).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
