Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 Javascript CElement::HasFlag memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
5.8$5k-$25k0.00

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function CElement::HasFlag of the component Javascript. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 09/27/2012. The weakness was published 12/09/2016 by Berend-Jan Wever (SkyLined) as MSIE 9 MSHTML CElement::HasĀFlag memory corruption as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/07/2017). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future. The advisory points out:

An attacker would need to get a target user to open a specially crafted web-page. Disabling JavaScript should prevent an attacker from triggering the vulnerable code path.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1534 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:

Between December 2012 and February 2013: Microsoft addresses this vulnerability.
