A vulnerability was found in Social Pug - Easy Social Share Buttons 1.1.2/1.2.5 on WordPress (WordPress Plugin). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file /wp-admin/admin.php. The manipulation of the argument dpsp_message_class
with the input value %22%3E%3Cscript%3Ealert(1)%3C/script%3E
leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (Reflected). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity.
The bug was discovered 02/24/2016. The weakness was presented 12/09/2016 by Tom Adams as Reflected XSS in Social Pug – Easy Social Share Buttons could allow an attacker to do almost anything an admin user can (WordPress plugin) as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 288 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:wp-admin/admin.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 1.2.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
