Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-3145.
The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2013 by Omair as ms13-jul as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3150 since 04/17/2013. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67212 (MS13-055: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2846071)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100157 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-055)).
Applying the patch MS13-JUL is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13048.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (67212). The entries 9399, 9400, 9401 and 9402 are pretty similar.
