A vulnerability has been found in PCRE up to 8.37 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function find_fixedlength
of the file pcre_compile.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the find_fixedlength function in pcre_compile.c in PCRE before 8.38 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or obtain sensitive information from heap memory and possibly bypass the ASLR protection mechanism via a crafted regular expression with an excess closing parenthesis.
The bug was discovered 06/26/2015. The weakness was shared 12/13/2016 by Wen Guanxing (AdLab) with Venustech ADLAB (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vcs.pcre.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-5073 since 06/26/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84843 (Fedora 21 : pcre-8.35-12.fc21 (2015-11019)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157182 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for pcre (ELSA-2016-1025)).
Upgrading to version 8.38 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
