Apple iOS up to 10.1.1 WebKit memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 10.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The software performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 12/14/2016. The weakness was published 12/13/2016 by Boris Zbarsky with Palo Alto Networks as HT207422 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7642 since 09/09/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/06/2022). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future. The advisory points out:

Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed through improved state management.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95825 (Apple iTunes < 12.5.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Peer-To-Peer File Sharing and running in the context remote. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370265 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.5.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (HT207427)).

Upgrading to version 10.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (95825). Similar entries are available at 94138, 94129, 94130 and 94131.
