The signature-update functionality in Windows Defender on Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 relies on an incorrect pathname, which allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse application in the %SYSTEMDRIVE% top-level directory, aka "Microsoft Windows 7 Defender Improper Pathname Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 07/09/2013 by Alton Blom with Reserve Bank of Australia as ms13-jul as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3154 since 04/17/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67215 (MS13-058: Vulnerability in Windows Defender Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2847927)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
