The bug was discovered 12/13/2016. The weakness was released 12/13/2016 by Masato Kinugawa with Cure53 as MS16-145 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7280 since 09/09/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95809 (MS16-145: Cumulative Security Update for Microsoft Edge (3204062)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91316 (Microsoft Edge Cumulative Security Update (MS16-145)).

Applying the patch MS16-145 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
