The bug was discovered 12/13/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2016 by Haifei Li with Intel as MS16-148 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-7267 since 09/09/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95811 (MS16-148: Security Update for Microsoft Office (3204068)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110292 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS16-148)).
Applying the patch MS16-148 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (95811). The entries 94434, 94439, 94440 and 94441 are pretty similar.
