VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 2.0.7 ux/libmkv_plugin.dll memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 2.0.7 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block in the library ux/libmkv_plugin.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

** DISPUTED ** plugins/demux/libmkv_plugin.dll in VideoLAN VLC Media Player 2.0.7, and possibly other versions, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted MKV file, possibly involving an integer overflow and out-of-bounds read or heap-based buffer overflow, or an uncaught exception. NOTE: the vendor disputes the severity and claimed vulnerability type of this issue, stating "This PoC crashes VLC, indeed, but does nothing more... this is not an integer overflow error, but an uncaught exception and I doubt that it is exploitable. This uncaught exception makes VLC abort, not execute random code, on my Linux 64bits machine." A PoC posted by the original researcher shows signs of an attacker-controlled out-of-bounds read, but the affected instruction does not involve a register that directly influences control flow.

The weakness was presented 07/09/2013 by Kaveh Ghaemmaghami with Secunia as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure) via Secunia. The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3245 since 04/22/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Kaveh Ghaemmaghami. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78879 (GLSA-201411-01 : VLC: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121324 (VLC Media Player Multiple Security Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (78879). Additional details are provided at h-online.com. See 4118, 7069, 10074 and 57286 for similar entries.
