Use-after-free while manipulating the "navigator" object within WebVR. Note: WebVR is not currently enabled by default. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 50.1.

The bug was discovered 12/13/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2016 by Christian Holler (lion) as MFSA 2016-94 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9896 since 12/07/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900045 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196652 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-3155-1)).

Upgrading to version 50.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
