A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 50 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component WebVR. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Use-after-free while manipulating the "navigator" object within WebVR. Note: WebVR is not currently enabled by default. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 50.1.
The bug was discovered 12/13/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2016 by Christian Holler (lion) as MFSA 2016-94 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9896 since 12/07/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900045 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196652 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-3155-1)).
Upgrading to version 50.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
