apt prior 1.0.9.8.4/1.4~beta2 Signature Validation path error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in apt. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Signature Validation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-417. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 12/05/2016. The weakness was released 12/13/2016 by Jann Horn as DSA 3733-1 as confirmed posting (Mailing List). The advisory is shared at lists.debian.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-1252 since 12/27/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

ann Horn of Google Project Zero discovered that APT, the high level package manager, does not properly handle errors when validating signatures on InRelease files. An attacker able to man-in-the-middle HTTP requests to an apt repository that uses InRelease files (clearsigned Release files), can take advantage of this flaw to circumvent the signature of the InRelease file, leading to arbitrary code execution.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95808 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS / 16.10 : apt vulnerability (USN-3156-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 1.0.9.8.4 or 1.4~beta2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95808) and Exploit-DB (40916).
