Apport up to 2.20.3 apport/ui.py CrashDB code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apport up to 2.20.3. This affects an unknown code of the file apport/ui.py. The manipulation of the argument CrashDB with the input value { leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in Apport before 2.20.4. In apport/ui.py, Apport reads the CrashDB field and it then evaluates the field as Python code if it begins with a "{". This allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary Python code.

The bug was discovered 12/14/2016. The weakness was released 12/17/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9949 since 12/14/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95873 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS / 16.10 : apport vulnerabilities (USN-3157-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196654 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Apport Vulnerabilities (USN-3157-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.20.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (40937), Tenable (95873) and SecurityFocus (BID 95011†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-94582 and VDB-94583. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
