QEMU USB Redirector resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version unknown). This affects an unknown part of the component USB Redirector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Quick Emulator (Qemu) built with the USB redirector usb-guest support is vulnerable to a memory leakage flaw. It could occur while destroying the USB redirector in 'usbredir_handle_destroy'. A guest user/process could use this issue to leak host memory, resulting in DoS for a host.

The bug was discovered 12/23/2016. The weakness was released 12/23/2016 by Prasad J Pandit (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9907 since 12/08/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96529 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : qemu (SUSE-SU-2017:0127-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169489 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu (SUSE-SU-2017:0127-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
