A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.4 (Operating System). This issue affects the function sock_setsockopt
of the file net/core/sock.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The sock_setsockopt function in net/core/sock.c in the Linux kernel before 3.5 mishandles negative values of sk_sndbuf and sk_rcvbuf, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability for a crafted setsockopt system call with the (1) SO_SNDBUF or (2) SO_RCVBUF option.
The bug was discovered 12/28/2016. The weakness was released 12/28/2016 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-6704 since 12/02/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96188 (Debian DLA-772-1 : linux security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169706 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2017:0437-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
