Apache Wicket up to 6.24.0 Deserialize DiskFileItem DeferredFileOutputStream deserialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Apache Wicket. Affected is the function DiskFileItem of the component Deserialize Handler. The manipulation of the argument DeferredFileOutputStream with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The bug was discovered 12/31/2016. The weakness was published 12/31/2016 by Jacob Baines and Pedro Santos with Tenable Network Security as CVE-2016-6793 Apache Wicket deserialization vulnerability as confirmed news (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wicket.apache.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-6793 since 08/12/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:

Depending on the ISerializer set in the Wicket application, it’s possible that a Wicket’s object deserialized from an untrusted source and utilized by the application to causes the code to enter in an infinite loop. Specifically, Wicket’s DiskFileItem class, serialized by Kryo, allows an attacker to hack its serialized form to put a client on an infinite loop if the client attempts to write on the DeferredFileOutputStream attribute.

Upgrading to version 1.5.17 or 6.25.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 95168†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1037541†).
