A denial of service vulnerability exists in the handling of the MXIT protocol in Pidgin. Specially crafted MXIT data sent via the server could potentially result in an out-of-bounds read. A malicious server or user can send an invalid mood to trigger this vulnerability.
The bug was discovered 06/21/2016. The weakness was released 01/06/2017 by Yves Younan with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2373 since 02/12/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
