A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ISC BIND up to 9.9.9-P4/9.10.4-P4/9.11.0-P1 (Domain Name Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component DNSSEC Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
named in ISC BIND 9.9.9-P4, 9.9.9-S6, 9.10.4-P4, and 9.11.0-P1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) via a response containing an inconsistency among the DNSSEC-related RRsets.
The bug was discovered 01/11/2017. The weakness was disclosed 01/11/2017 as AA-01440 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at kb.isc.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-9147 since 11/03/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
Depending on the type of query and the EDNS options in the query they receive, DNSSEC-enabled authoritative servers are expected to include RRSIG and other RRsets in their responses to recursive servers. DNSSEC-validating servers will also make specific queries for DS and other RRsets. Whether DNSSEC-validating or not, an error in processing malformed query responses that contain DNSSEC-related RRsets that are inconsistent with other RRsets in the same query response can trigger an assertion failure. Although the combination of properties which triggers the assertion should not occur in normal traffic, it is potentially possible for the assertion to be triggered deliberately by an attacker sending a specially-constructed answer.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96483 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS / 16.10 : bind9 vulnerabilities (USN-3172-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196668 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Bind9 Vulnerabilities (USN-3172-1)). The advisory illustrates:
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability will cause named to encounter an assertion failure and stop executing, resulting in denial of service to clients.
Applying the patch 9.9.9-P5/9.10.4-P5/9.11.0-P2 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (96483). The entries 95200 and 95201 are pretty similar.
