Perl 5.6.1/5.8.4 Script race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Perl 5.6.1/5.8.4 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Script Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the rmtree function in the File::Path module in Perl 5.6.1 and 5.8.4 sets read/write permissions for the world, which allows local users to delete arbitrary files and directories, and possibly read files and directories, via a symlink attack.

The bug was discovered 12/23/2004. The weakness was published 10/28/2004 by Paul Szabo with Trustix (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at trustix.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0452 since 05/06/2004. The attack needs to be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

After 2 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19112 (FreeBSD : perl -- File::Path insecure file/directory permissions (c418d472-6bd1-11d9-93ca-000a95bc6fae)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121527 (Solaris Multiple Vulnerabilities in Perl 5.8).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at perl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18650), Tenable (19112), SecurityFocus (BID 12072†), OSVDB (12588†) and Secunia (SA18517†). Similar entries are available at VDB-942, VDB-950, VDB-975 and VDB-1089.
