A vulnerability was found in Info-ZIP UnZIP 6.0 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function zi_short
of the file zipinfo.c of the component Compression Method Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Buffer overflow in the zi_short function in zipinfo.c in Info-Zip UnZip 6.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a large compression method value in the central directory file header.
The bug was discovered 12/05/2016. The weakness was released 01/18/2017 by Alex (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9844 since 12/05/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 44 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900032 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
