A vulnerability has been found in Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 11.0.18/15.006.30244/15.020.20042 (Document Reader Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component JPEG Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Adobe Acrobat Reader versions 15.020.20042 and earlier, 15.006.30244 and earlier, 11.0.18 and earlier have an exploitable heap overflow vulnerability in the JPEG decoder routine. Successful exploitation could lead to arbitrary code execution.
The bug was discovered 01/20/2017. The weakness was disclosed 01/24/2017 by Aleksandar Nikolic with Zero Day Initiative as APSB17-01 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at helpx.adobe.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-2971 since 12/02/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209344 (Adobe Reader < 15.006.30279 / 15.023.20053 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB17-01) (macOS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
