An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. macOS before 10.12.3 is affected. The issue involves the "Help Viewer" component, which allows XSS attacks via a crafted web site.

The bug was discovered 01/23/2017. The weakness was presented 01/23/2017 by Ian Beer (lokihardt) with Google Project Zero as HT207483 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-2361 since 12/01/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007. The advisory points out:

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96731 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370282 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.3 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2017-01-23-2)).

Upgrading to version 10.12.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
