The weakness was published 03/01/2017 by Sven Blumenstein, Xiaoran Wang and Andrew Griffiths with Google as Veritas NetBackup v6.x, v7.x, v8.0 and NetBackup appliances v2.x, v3.0 - Multiple Critical Vulnerabilities as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of Veritas. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-6409 since 03/01/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
Multiple critical vulnerabilities were identified in Veritas NetBackup and NetBackup appliance. The vulnerabilities were discovered during a black box security assessment and therefore the vulnerability list should not be considered exhaustive.
A public exploit has been developed by Sven Blumenstein/Xiaoran Wang/Andrew Griffiths and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 92 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104888 (Veritas NetBackup Appliance < 2.7.2 / 3.1.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities (VTS17-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling tcp/1556. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:
