A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Symantec Web Gateway up to 5.1.0 (Firewall Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file spywall/networkConfig.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. The management console on the Symantec Web Gateway (SWG) appliance before 5.1.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands by injecting a command into an application script.
The bug was discovered 12/18/2012. The weakness was presented 07/25/2013 by Wolfgang Ettlingers with SEC Consult Unternehmensberatung GmbH as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1616 since 02/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 219 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. By approaching the search of inurl:spywall/networkConfig.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69179 (Symantec Web Gateway < 5.1.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12714 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
