A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark 1.10.0 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file epan/dissectors/packet-dcom-sysact.c of the component DCOM ISystemActivator Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
epan/dissectors/packet-dcom-sysact.c in the DCOM ISystemActivator dissector in Wireshark 1.10.x before 1.10.1 does not properly determine whether there is remaining packet data to process, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was presented 07/26/2013 by Laurent Butti (Oliver) as wnpa-sec-2013-44 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4926 since 07/26/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69849 (Fedora 19 : wireshark-1.10.1-1.fc19 (2013-16362)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121476 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 1.10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86019) and Tenable (69849). See 9765, 9766, 9767 and 9768 for similar entries.
