RealVNC up to 4.0 TCP Connection 100 TCP Connections denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in RealVNC up to 4.0. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component TCP Connection Handler. The manipulation as part of a 100 TCP Connections leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

RealVNC 4.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a large number of connections to port 5900.

The bug was discovered 08/25/2004. The weakness was published 11/09/2004 by Allan Zhang (Dr_insane) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secunia.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1750 since 02/26/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 76 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at realvnc.com.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (17123).
