A vulnerability was found in RealVNC up to 4.0. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component TCP Connection Handler. RealVNC 4.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a large number of connections to port 5900.
The bug was discovered 08/25/2004. The weakness was published 11/09/2004 by Allan Zhang (Dr_insane) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secunia.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1750 since 02/26/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 76 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at realvnc.com.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling.
