A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in phpMyAdmin (Database Administration Software). This issue affects an unknown part in the library libraries/common.inc.php of the component Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. phpMyAdmin 3.5.x before 3.5.8.2 and 4.0.x before 4.0.4.2 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via an invalid request, which reveals the installation path in an error message, related to pmd_common.php and other files.
The weakness was presented 07/28/2013 by Emanuel Bronshtein with BugSec as PMASA-2013-12 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at phpmyadmin.net. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4998 since 07/29/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
By approaching the search of inurl:libraries/common.inc.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76917 (Fedora 19 : phpMyAdmin-4.2.6-1.fc19 (2014-8577)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122524 (Fedora Security Update for phpMyAdmin (FEDORA-2014-8577)).
Upgrading to version 3.5.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at phpmyadmin.net. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
