GD Graphics Library up to 2.2.3 gd_interpolation.c gdContributionsAlloc u integer underflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GD Graphics Library up to 2.2.3 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function gdContributionsAlloc of the file gd_interpolation.c. The manipulation of the argument u with an unknown input leads to a integer underflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-191. The product subtracts one value from another, such that the result is less than the minimum allowable integer value, which produces a value that is not equal to the correct result. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer underflow in the _gdContributionsAlloc function in gd_interpolation.c in the GD Graphics Library (aka libgd) before 2.2.4 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via vectors related to decrementing the u variable.

The bug was discovered 01/28/2017. The weakness was published 03/15/2017 by Salvatore Bonaccorso (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-10166 since 01/28/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97369 (openSUSE Security Update : gd (openSUSE-2017-289)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169771 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for php7 (SUSE-SU-2017:0534-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.2.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (97369). Similar entries are available at 95037, 95171, 95879 and 98126.
