The name_parse function in evdns.c in libevent before 2.1.6-beta allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via vectors involving the label_len variable, which triggers an out-of-bounds stack read.

The bug was discovered 01/31/2017. The weakness was presented 03/15/2017 by Guido Vranken (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-10195 since 02/01/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
