Apache Subversion up to 1.8.0 mod_dav_svn memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The mod_dav_svn Apache HTTPD server module in Subversion 1.7.0 through 1.7.10 and 1.8.x before 1.8.1 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (assertion failure or out-of-bounds read) via a certain (1) COPY, (2) DELETE, or (3) MOVE request against a revision root.

The weakness was released 07/19/2013 by Daniel Shahaf with Apache Infrastructure as confirmed advisory (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4131 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75100 (openSUSE Security Update : subversion (openSUSE-SU-2013:1286-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121449 (Apache Subversion Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 1.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85983) and Tenable (75100). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 10157, 10158, 10159 and 10160.
