A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in uClibc-ng up to 1.0.11. This affects the function _decode_dotted
of the file libc/inet/resolv.c of the component DNS Reply Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The __decode_dotted function in libc/inet/resolv.c in uClibc-ng before 1.0.12 allows remote DNS servers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via vectors involving compressed items in a reply.
The bug was discovered 05/02/2016. The weakness was published 03/24/2017 by Daniel Fahlgren (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-2224 since 02/05/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 85 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92568 (Debian DLA-561-1 : uclibc security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 1.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (92568) and SecurityFocus (BID 82903†). Similar entry is available at VDB-98506. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
