Miele Professional PG 8528 PST10 Embedded Web Server path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Miele Professional PG 8528 PST10 (affected version not known). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Embedded Web Server. The manipulation with the input value /../../../../../../../../../../../../etc/shadow leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered on Miele Professional PG 8528 PST10 devices. The corresponding embedded webserver "PST10 WebServer" typically listens to port 80 and is prone to a directory traversal attack; therefore, an unauthenticated attacker may be able to exploit this issue to access sensitive information to aide in subsequent attacks. A Proof of Concept is GET /../../../../../../../../../../../../etc/shadow HTTP/1.1.

The bug was discovered 11/16/2016. The weakness was published 03/24/2017 by Jens Regel as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-7240 since 03/23/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/04/2024). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006. This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception.

A public exploit has been developed by Jens Regel in HTTP GET Request and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 128 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The code used by the exploit is:

~$ telnet 192.168.0.1 80
Trying 192.168.0.1...
Connected to 192.168.0.1.
Escape character ist '^]'.
GET /../../../../../../../../../../../../etc/shadow HTTP/1.1

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
